Face mask failures on the rise

The Building Safety Group (BSG)has found there to be a 58% rise in breaches in usage of personal protective equipment (PPE). That's based on a review of 10,000 independent inspections of construction sites.

The main reason for this increase is face fit dust mask failings. Dust fume infringements were up 13% and COSHH violations were up 43%. As regular exposure to construction dust can cause lung cancer, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and silicosis, the face mask failures are of great concern.

BSG managing director Paul Kimpton commented:

"Everyone involved in construction has a responsibility in managing risks to health, and all parties must take ownership of their part of the process. Construction dust is not just a nuisance. It can seriously damage your health and cause life changing lung diseases."
